Church Army

Church Army is a national charity supporting people facing homelessness and social exclusion across the UK.

I worked closely with the communications team to design their People & Places supporter magazine, alongside campaign materials including a Christmas appeal centred around the Ruby Project, which supports women involved in the sex industry. The work required a sensitive and considered approach, balancing storytelling with clear communication to connect with a wide audience of supporters.

The Approach

The People & Places magazine was designed to feel warm, accessible and easy to navigate, using a clean editorial structure that supported a mix of longer-form stories, updates and photography. Careful attention was given to hierarchy, pacing and readability to ensure content remained engaging without feeling overwhelming.

The Christmas appeal required a more focused and emotive tone, while still aligning with the wider Church Army identity. The messaging centred on the work of the Ruby Project, so the design needed to communicate this with clarity and sensitivity, using strong imagery, considered typography and a clear call-to-action to encourage support.

Across both pieces, consistency was key. Layout, colour and typographic choices were developed to feel cohesive while allowing flexibility for different types of content and messaging.

Outcome

The result was a series of clear, engaging and thoughtfully designed materials that supported Church Army’s communication with its audience across both editorial and campaign formats.

The magazine provided an accessible platform for sharing stories and updates, while the Christmas appeal delivered a focused and impactful message designed to connect with supporters and encourage engagement.
